What adds to the price
- Breaking out concrete: common on the airfield estates; labour and disposal.
- Deeper sub-base: on soft or clay ground.
- Drainage: channels and a soakaway for non-permeable surfaces.
- Tree protection: no-dig systems cost more than a standard dig-out.
- Access: tight terraced plots slow the work.
- Dropped kerb: about £1,800 new or £1,100 to widen on 2026 UK averages (Checkatrade).

Comparing quotes
Make sure each quote states the dig-out depth, sub-base thickness, surface product, edging, drainage and who handles the crossing. The cheapest quote often has the thinnest base.
Common questions
Why is my quote higher than the averages?
Usually because of break-out, drainage, access or tree work.
Is VAT included?
Check; some quotes are ex-VAT.
Do bigger drives cost less per m²?
Generally, yes.
Is a deposit normal?
A modest deposit for materials is common; avoid paying everything upfront.
