The airfield estates
Much of southern Thornaby stands on the former RAF Thornaby airfield, which closed to flying in 1958 and was bought by the then borough council in 1962. Through the 1960s and 1970s it was built over with housing, the town centre (completed in stages between 1965 and 1968) and an industrial estate. Homes from this period often have open-plan fronts and original concrete drives, which is why replacing a concrete drive is such a common job here.
One council
All of Thornaby is covered by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council for highways and planning. The owner applies for a dropped kerb, and the council or a contractor with its Opening Up licence builds it.
